The Panama Hat was officially introduced in the early 20th century, but it's inspired by South American weaving traditions that date back half a millennia. The hat originates in Ecuador, but takes its name from the Panama Canal the workers who built the canal wore them for protection from the sun. Guanabana's Panama Hat has a pinch front, wide brim and patterned band around the crown. It's hand-woven from natural toquilla straw by Wayuu artisans using the traditional Colombian iraca technique. This is a hat with some structure to it, so avoid tossing it in your bag if you don't want it to get bent out of shape. Guanabana's boho-chic designs are the realization of founder Almudena Espinosa's dream to make a lasting positive impact on artisan communities. Founded in 2005 and based in Madrid, the brand's entirely handmade styles showcase both her Spanish heritage and the techniques of Latin America.
