Introduced in 1991 by the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station, 'LSU Purple' is ideal for USDA zones 9 and warmer, and is particularly suited to hot, humid areas. Fruits are medium in size and weight, with dark-purple, glossy skins and light strawberry-colored flesh with a high sugar content when ripe. Produces excellent quality fruit the first year, with quality improving as the tree ages. Trees are considered mature at five years and will produce three distinct crops: a light, old wood crop in early spring; a heavy main crop in summer; and a fall crop that can last into December.
