Die Studie untersucht das Parteiensystem des Freistaates Sachsen von der Formierung der demokratischen Krfte im Herbst 1989 bis zum Jahr 2005. Mit der Landtagswahl vom 19. September 2004 vernderten sich die politischen Verhltnisse im bisherigen ostdeutschen "Musterland" radikal: Die Christdemokraten verloren ihre absolute Mehrheit und mussten eine Koalition mit der SPD eingehen. Die rechtsextremistische NPD zog in den Landtag ein und wurde zweitstrkste Oppositionspartei. Vorangegangen war ein Wahlkampf, in dem PDS und NPD die etablierten Parteien wegen der "Hartz-IV"- Reformen massiv attackiert hatten. Das Parteiensystem Sachsens hat sich, auch im Hinblick auf den antiextremistischen Konsensus, grundlegend gewandelt.
