Es zeigte sich, da der therapeutische Schlafentzug, der von einigen Autoren auch als Wachtherapie bezeichnet wird, mit gnstigen antidepressiven Effekten einhergeht, insbesondere wenn er wiederholte Anwendung findet. Obwohl der therapeutische Schlafentzug bereits breite klinische Anwendung findet, ist der Wirkmechanismus noch nicht eindeutig geklrt. Verschiedene berlegungen, das zirkadiane System, die Neurotransmitter und die mit diesen verbundenen hormonellen Parameter betreffend, wurden als Erklrungshypothese herangezogen.
