Arnold Eucken lebte und wirkte in einer Zeit, in der dramatische Vernderungen stattfanden. Er wuchs im Bildungsbrgertum auf (Vater Nobelpreistrger fr Literatur), war Corpsstudent und Offizier 1914-1918, wirkte in der Weimarer Republik, versuchte im Hitlerreich eine Insel der Wissenschaft zu erhalten, war Helfer des Wiederaufbaus nach 1945. Er war einer der groen Baumeister des Wissensgebudes der Chemie in der Zeit, in der die Physik den Umbruch durch das Werk von Albert Einstein und Max Planck erfuhr. Auf eigentlich allen Gebieten der theoretischen Chemie hat der fanatische Arbeiter die neuen Ideen eingebracht und auch das Interesse der Technik geweckt und entwickelt. Die Vielfalt des Wirkens von Arnold Eucken soll auch fr den Nichtfachmann sichtbar gemacht werden.
