Zu den wichtigsten physikalischen Eigenschaften des Ozons zhlt seine Fhigkeit, Strahlungsenergie gewisser Wellenlngenbereiche zu absorbieren. Whrend der gewhnliche Sauerstoff (0 ) fr alle Wellen 2 lngen}..=: 2400 transparent ist, absorbiert Ozon (0 ) in drei meteorologisch wichtigen Bereichen. 3 Im Gebiet zwischen ca. 2000 - 3300 mit einem Maximum bei 2500 findet extrem starke UV -Ab sorption statt. Trotz der uerst geringen atmosphrischen Gesamtozonmengen mit optischen Weglngen zwischen 0, 2 und 0, 4 cm +) verhindert diese Absorptionsfhigkeit ein Eindringen der harten UV -Strah lung (Wellenlngen X 5 3000 ') bis zur Erdoberflche und ist damit von grundlegender Bedeutung fr die Existenz von Leben auf der Erde. Darberhinaus bewirkt die UV -Absorption die Ausbildung des Tempera turmaximums in 50 km Hhe.
