Die normative Frage "Wie soll Literatur bewertet werden?" bestimmte lange Zeit fast ausschlielich die Diskussion ber literarische Wertung. Erst in den 1980er Jahren begann die Literaturwissenschaft, sich von normativen Vorannahmen freizumachen und auf die Frage "Wie wird Literatur bewertet?" umzustellen. Im Zuge dieser deskriptiven Wende wurden wichtige historische, analytische und empirische Studien vorgelegt. In kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit Konzepten der Literaturwissenschaft (Schmidt, von Heydebrand/Winko), der analytischen Philosophie (von Wright, Najder) sowie der Motivations- und Kognitionspsychologie (Heckhausen, Csikszentmihalyi, Oatley) entwickelt Friederike Worthmann diese Studien weiter. Ihre besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt dabei der Theorie literarischer Handlungen sowie dem Zusammenhang von Gefhlen und literarischen Wertungen. Sie legt ein Modell vor, das als Leitfaden zur Analyse literarischer Wertungen praktisch einsetzbar ist.
