"Im Alltag waren Juden kein Thema, weil das in der DDR keine Rolle mehr spielte. " - . Zu DDR-Zeiten kannte ich gar keine Leute, die Juden waren; ob Jude oder nicht, man ging ganz normal mit ihnen um. Heute werden aus Menschen wieder Juden gemacht. " - . Eine Forschung ber jdische Kom munisten? Gab es denn berhaupt Juden in der DDR?" - ,,Jdischsein und Kommunist - wie pat das zusammen?" - Typische Fragen und Kommenta re, die mir in den letzten Jahren immer wieder begegneten, wenn ich er whnte, da ich dabei sei, Interviews mit Eltern, Kindern und Enkeln aus Familien von jdischen Kommunist/innen zu fhren. Zu meinem Erstaunen stellte ich immer wieder fest: Vielen meiner Gesprchspartner/innen war nicht bewut, da vor allem Juden zu den Rckkehrer/innen gehrt hatten, die sich nach 1945 aus politischen Grnden fr ein Leben in der DDR ent schieden. Die Fragen und Kommentare lieen sich ber diese Gemeinsamkeit hinaus allerdings in Ost- und West-Reaktionen unterscheiden: So interes sierten sich ehemalige DDR-Brger/innen in der Regel fr das Thema, um mehr ber die Gesellschaft zu erfahren, in der sie aufgewachsen waren. Die meisten hatten sich noch nie Gedanken darber gemacht, ob oder wie Juden in der DDR gelebt hatten; einige waren skeptisch und fragten sich, ob sie Ju den berhaupt als Juden wahrnehmen wollten.
