Dieses Buch ist die Ausarbeitung und Weiterentwicklung einer Vorlesung, die fr Na turwissenschaftler an der Universitt Freiburg gehalten wurde. Angesprochen sind voc allem Studenten der Biologie, der Chemie und der Mineralogie; aber auch angehenden Physikern sollte die Lektredabei helfen, sich die bereits im ersten Semester gebrauchten Mathematikkenntnisse rasch anzueignen. Vorausgesetzt wird nur elementarer Schulstoff. Der Inhalt um fat die wichtigsten Techniken der Analysis (Differential- und Integralrechnung, elementare Funktionen, Fourierreihen, gewhnliche Differentialgleichungen) und das Notwendigste aus der analytischen Geometrie und linearen Algebra (Vektorrechnung. Matrizen. lineare Gleichungssysteme und Determinanten, Symmetriegruppen), Hinzu kamen in der 3.Auflage zwei Kapitel ber Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung und Statistik (wichtige Verteilungen, Erwartungswert und Varianz, Zufalisstichproben,Schtzen und Testen). Die vorliegende 4. Auflage ist ein unvernderter Nachdruck der 3. Auflage .. Zur Art der Darstellung: Die Mathematik erscheint nicht als Selbstzweck. sondern als H i I fs wissenschaft. Fragestellungen und Begriffsbildungen werden nach Mglichkeit von den Anwendungen her motiviert. An die Stelle allgemeiner Beweise treten oft Beweise fr einfachere Sonderflle. Viele Aussagen bleiben ganz unbewiesen. Sie werden dann durch umso mehr Beispiele erlutert und plausibel gemacht. Generell galt die Devise: Zahlreiche Beispiele, darunter mglichst viele aus den einzelnen Natur wissenschaften. Nach jedem greren Abschnitt findet man eine Sammlung von bungsaufgaben. Fr die meisten davon - durch * gekennzeichnet - sind die Ergebnisse am Ende des Buches kurz angegeben. Auf weitergehende mathematische Literatur wurde kaum hingewiesen,da dem Leser dafr ohnehin die Zeit fehlen wird. Die in eckigen Klammern stehenden Literaturan gaben gehren in der Regel zu Anwendungsbeispielen.
