Die Avantgarden des frhen 20. Jahrhunderts haben sich nicht, wie behauptet wurde, totgelaufen oder sind gar gescheitert. Die nationalsozialistische Diktatur hatte die Avantgarde zwar in Deutschland vernichtet, zugleich lste sie aber eine Welle der Emigration aus. Viele der Unterdrckten gingen in die USA, wo sie eine Avantgardisierung der Kunstwelt bewirkten. Das ermglichte nachfolgenden Generationen, das in Europa unvollendet gebliebene Projekt fortzufhren. Walter Benjamin hatte den Terminus Politisierung der Kunst fr die Bemhungen der Avantgardisten geprgt, die sich einer sthetisierung der Politik entgegenstemmten. Es wird kunstsoziologisch gezeigt, dass diese Saat in den kulturellen Zentren der USA aufging. Den Impetus der Avantgardisten, die Funktion der Kunst in der Gesellschaft zu verndern, griffen knstlerische Bewegungen in Kalifornien und New York auf.
