Aufbauend auf Medienberichten und Interviews untersucht Andreas Galonska die Parteiensysteme in Rheinland-Pfalz und Hessen ber einen Zeitraum von fnfzig Jahren. Als entscheidende Faktoren der langfristigen Entwicklung arbeitet der Autor lnderinterne Besonderheiten (politische Traditionen, Sozialstruktur, Personalpolitik) sowie lnderexterne Gegebenheiten (Einflu anderer Lnder, der Bundesebene und des Bundesrates) heraus. Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht die Frage, welche Faktoren die Herausbildung von Dominanzpositionen der groen Volksparteien verursacht haben. Abschlieend wird die Einebnung der vorherrschenden Stellung von SPD und CDU seit den 80er Jahren untersucht.
