Vorliegende Monographie berichtet ber einige neuere Untersuchun gen des Verfassers und seiner Mitarbeiter ber die Bewertungstheorie optischer Bilder. Es grndet sich auf drei Vorlesungen, die im Juni 1958 im physikalischen Institut der Technischen Hochschule, Braunschweig, auf Einladung von Professor G. Cario und mit Frderung durch den British Council gehalten wurden. Bis vor kurzem war die Technik optischer Entwrfe nahezu vllig auf die trigonometrische Verfolgung von Strahlen begrndet, ergnzt durch die Konstruktion und nachfolgende Prfung von Versuchs modellen. Durch die Ergebnisse solcher Strahlenverfolgung konnte man eine ziemlich gute Vorstellung der photographischen Leistung eines Systems geVlinnen, aber es war nicht mglich, mit auch nur einiger Gewiheit vorauszusagen, welches von zwei hochwertigen photographi schen Systemen sich in der Praxis besser verhalten werde. Es scheint nmlich, da die tatschliche Leistung eines lichtstarken, hochwertigen Systems selbst in Fllen, in denen die Wellenaberrationen den Betrag von mehreren Wellenlngen erreichen, vorwiegend durch die Struktur des hellen Kernes der sogenannten Punktbilder in verschiedenen Teilen des Abbildungsfeldes bestimmt wird. Diese Struktur ist durch die optische Beugung stark beeinflut. Weiterhin liefert das Verfahren der Strahlenverfolgung keine praktische Mglichkeit, den Einflu der photo graphischen Verwaschung und des sogenannten Emulsionsgerusches quantitativ in Betracht zu ziehen. Ein Ausweg aus diesen Schwierigkeiten ist vor kurzem gefunden worden. Er besteht darin, auf das optische Gebiet jene Begriffe und Methoden der Fouriertheorie zu bernehmen, welche sich in der N ach richtentechnik schon so fruchtbar erwiesen haben.
