Christian Matheis konnte eine neue dehydrierende Kupplungsreaktion von Arenen mit Alkoholen in Gegenwart eines Kupfer/Silber-Katalysatorsystems entwickeln. Diese intermolekulare CH-Alkoxylierung bietet einen bequemen Zugang zu der wichtigen Substanzklasse der Arylether. Die Anwendungsbreite demonstriert der Autor anhand einer Vielzahl unterschiedlich funktionalisierter Arene und mithilfe des Katalysatorsystems gelingen ihm ebenfalls Alkoxylierungen benzylischer CH-Gruppen unter Bildung von Benzylalkylethern. Durch eine Reihe mechanistischer Studien konnte er ein vertieftes Verstndnis ber den Ablauf der dehydrierenden Alkoxylierung gewinnen.
