Die bereits vorliegenden Bnde behandeln das europische Appeasement und berseeische Asylpraxis (Bd. 2), Internierung, Flucht und Lebensbedingungen im Zweiten Weltkrieg (Bd. 3) sowie die Exilpresse (Bd. 4). Bd. 1 ist in zwei Teilbnden der Vorgeschichte des Exils gewidmet. Nachdem Bd. 1,1 die Mentalitt der Weimardeutschen und die Politisierung der Intellektuellen dargestellt hat, ist Ausgangspunkt des zuletzt erschienenen Bandes 1,2 die Frage, wie es 1933 zu einer historisch beispiellosen Vertreibung von Autoren, Intellektuellen und Wissenschaftlern kommen konnte.
