Der Band ist eine Biografie des ersten Lehrkanzelinhabers fr Prhistorische Archologie im deutschen Sprachraum. Nach einer lngeren Zeit von Forschungen in Bosnien und der Herzegowina fand Hoernes eine Anstellung in der Prhistorischen Sammlung des Naturhistorischen Hofmuseums in Wien. Hier erst entschied er sich fr urgeschichtliche Forschungen. Er habilitierte sich fr das Fach 1892 und wurde bereits 1899 zum auerordentlichen Univ.-Professor an der Universitt Wien ernannt. 1911 erfolgte dann seine Berufung als ordentlicher Univ.-Professor an dieser Universitt. Hoernes verfasste einige bedeutende bersichtswerke zur Urgeschichte in Europa, die noch heute Geltung haben, und zahlreiche Fachbeitrge.
