With the Ultegra ST-R8170 brake/shift lever combination, SHIMANO is opening a new chapter in the history of its Di2 shifting group. The Ultegra ST-R8170 Di2 brake/shift lever not only supports the new 12-speed drivetrains but also makes the cable connection to the rear and front derailleur unnecessary. An integrated radio transmitter, powered by a CR1632 button cell, sends the shifting commands wirelessly to the rear derailleur as the master unit, which in turn forwards them to the front derailleur. The complex cabling in the cockpit area with junction box and Bluetooth module is now a thing of the past. Cabling is only still needed for additional satellite shifters. However, for friends of wired connections, SHIMANO also offers the option to continue connecting the components with cables instead. For the brake unit, too, the Japanese engineers focus on consistent further development. The hydraulic brake lever has been revised in terms of ergonomics and now impresses with excellent modulation, thanks to Servo-Wave technology. For optimal braking performance in all conditions, the BR-R8170 brake cylinder also ensures easier bleeding, thanks to a bleed screw that is separate from the bleed port. Moreover, the improved brake caliper design promises more clearance for the brake pads, which reduces noise levels and facilitates correct alignment. The J-Kit comes pre-filled and, thanks to the pre-installed olive, allows for easy cutting of the cables as well as cable routing inside the frame, too.
