The conflict arose when Argentine forces occupied the Falkland Islands prompting a British military response. The Vulcan XM597 part of the Royal Air Forces No. 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron was selected for the long-range bombing mission to strike the runway at Port Stanley Airport in the Falkland Islands.The Black Buck 6 mission was a remarkable feat of strategic aviation requiring multiple aerial refuelings and covering a staggering distance. On May 3 1982 XM597 piloted by Squadron Leader Neil McDougall flew from Ascension Island to the Falklands carrying conventional bombs to disable the runway and deny its use to Argentine aircraft. The success of this mission demonstrated the long-range capabilities of the Vulcan and the RAFs commitment to achieving strategic objectives during the Falklands War.Intro.
