The USS Lexington one of the most famous aircraft carriers of the war deployed its complement of SBD Dauntless aircraft to provide close air support and conduct bombing raids against Japanese targets in the Pacific.During this period the SBD-5 Dauntless proved its worth in numerous engagements including the pivotal Battle of the Philippine Sea also known as the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot." In this decisive naval battle U.S. Navy aircraft including the SBD Dauntless inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese Navys carrier-based air forces effectively neutralizing their threat and securing a crucial victory for the Allied forces.The SBD.
