William Hovde of the 358th Fighter Squadron 355th Fighter Group earned its place in history during World War II as a key component of the Allied air offensive over Europe. Based at RAF Steeple Morden the 355th Fighter Group nicknamed the "Steeple Morden Strafers" was tasked with long-range bomber escort missions ground attack and strafing operations deep in enemy territory. As one of the early adopters of the P-51 Mustang the 358th Fighter Squadron quickly demonstrated the aircraft's superior capabilities. With its Packard V-1650 Merlin engine the P-51B Mustang provided the range speed and firepower needed to escort bombers to strategic targets such as Berlin significantly reducing losses from enemy fighters.1st Lt. William Hovde an ace credited with 10.5 victories became well-known for his skilled and aggressive flying style. During his time with the 358th Fighter Squadron Hovde flew "Ole-II" on numerous missions across Europe.
