The IL-62M a Soviet-built long-range jet airliner was introduced in the late 1960s and quickly gained a reputation for its reliability and performance. As a member of the Ilyushin family the IL-62M was designed to compete with Western aircraft and was notable for its four-engine configuration and advanced features for its time including a fully automatic landing system. With a capacity of around 186 passengers it was primarily used for international flights connecting Hungary to various destinations across Europe the Middle East and North America.The IL-62M made its first flight in 1972 and its introduction into MALEV's fleet marked a significant expansion of the airline's capabilities. The aircraft provided vital links for Hungary during the Cold War facilitating not only tourism but also international trade and diplomacy. Throughout its service the IL-62M was praised for its comfortable cabin and relatively quiet operation making it a favorite among passengers. The aircraft was equipped with state-of-the-art avionics and an efficient wing design that contributed to its performance enabling it to operate on both short and long-hau.
