The SR-71A was designed for long-range high-speed high-altitude intelligence missions during the height of the Cold War. Capable of flying at speeds exceeding Mach 3 and at altitudes of over 85000 feet the Blackbird was nearly impossible to intercept by enemy aircraft or surface-to-air missiles. Its development by Lockheed's Skunk Works under the leadership of Kelly Johnson was a top-secret project and the SR-71A first took to the skies in 1964 immediately becoming a critical asset for the U.S. military in collecting intelligence over hostile territories.The SR-71A assigned to Detachment 4 of the 9th SRW at RAF Fairford (referred to colloquially as "F-Dartboard") was an essential part of U.S. reconnaissance operations in Europe. Operating from this forward base in the United Kingdom the Blackbird conducted intelligence-gathering missions over Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
