Introduced in 1943 the Cromwell became known for its impressive speed reaching up to 40 mph on road due to its powerful Rolls-Royce Meteor engine derived from the famed Merlin aircraft engine. The Cromwell's speed and maneuverability allowed it to excel in fast-paced armored warfare particularly where agility was essential. Armed with a 75mm dual-purpose gun the Cromwell was effective in both anti-infantry and anti-tank roles capable of supporting infantry and engaging German armor in a variety of combat scenarios.The Cromwell saw significant action in the later stages of the war most notably during the Normandy invasion and the Allied push across France and into Germany. Serving with the 7th Armoured Division known as the "Desert Rats" Cromwell tanks played a key role in Operation Overlord providing mobile fire support and spearheading assaults against German positions. Its high speed allowed it to maneuver quickly in the fluid shifting battlefields of Northern Europe outflanking slower enemy tanks and exploiting gaps in enemy lines.
