Bernhard von Gudden (1824 1886) war einer der fortschrittlichsten deutschen Psychiater in der zweiten Hlfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Gudden hat sich frhzeitig fr die Einfhrung des in der englischen Psychiatrie entwickelten "no-restraint"-Prinzips eingesetzt. Mit seinen neuroanatomischen und tierexperimentellen Studien wurde er zum Mitbegrnder der modernen Neuromorphologie; das Forschungskonzept der "retrograden Degeneration" beschrieb er zur gleichen Zeit, aber unabhngig von A. Waller. Bernhard von Gudden war Professor fr Psychiatrie an den Universitten in Zrich (1869 1872) und Mnchen (1872 1886). Weit ber Fachkreise hinaus wurde sein Name bekannt durch seinen tragischen Tod: zusammen mit dem von ihm begutachteten und betreuten Knig Ludwig II von Bayern starb er am 13. Juni 1886 im Starnberger See.
