Fr Baudrillard konstituiert und charakterisiert der Konsum deshalb die Kultur unserer Gesellschaft; er ist eine Ordnung von Bedeutungen wie die Sprache oder wie das Verwandtschaftssystem in der primitiven Gesellschaft. Die Konsumgesellschaft ist ein zentrales, im deutschen Sprachraum bisher kaum beachtetes Werk von Jean Baudrillard in deutscher Erstbersetzung.
