Mit ihrem modernisierungstheoretischen Ansatz im Rahmen ihrer Mittelmeerpolitik, versuchte die EU seit 1995 nicht nur die Volkswirtschaften der sdlichen Mittelmeer-Partnerlnder zu reformieren, sondern rechnete ebenso mit positiven Effekten auf der politischen Ebene, d.h. einer Liberalisierung der politischen Systeme. Die Ergebnisse dieser polit-konomischen Untersuchung legen nahe, dass der handelspolitische Ansatz der EU ihrem eigenen Anspruch der Demokratiefrderung zuwider luft und die Mechanismen autoritrer Herrschaft in Algerien festigt.
