Die Kindheit ist lange Zeit in der Sozialberichterstattung kaum bercksichtigt worden. Das Buch schildert erstmalig alle Entwicklungen aus der Perspektive der Kinder und vergleicht mit Hilfe einer groen Sekundranalyse ihr unterschiedliches Schicksal in Ost und West. Mit zunehmender Pluralisierung vervielfltigen sich die Lebensformen der Verheirateten und Nichtverheirateten. Das trifft die jeweiligen Kinder besonders stark. Seit 40 Jahren erleben Kinder Vernderungen in immer jngerem Alter. Wenn etwa die Mutter bei der Geburt des ersten Kindes unter 21 Jahre alt oder ihre Bildung hher als die des Vaters war, wird die Instabilitt fr die Kinder deutlich grer. Traditionelle Bildungsungleichheit der Eltern geht hingegen mit relativ hoher Stabilitt einher. Andererseits erleben immer mehr nichtehelich geborene Kinder whrend ihrer gesamten Kindheit keine verheirateten Eltern mehr.
