Die erste nichtkommunistische Regierung Polens wurde zwar bereits im Herbst 1989 gebildet, doch kam es erst 1997 zur Verabschiedung einer neuen Verfassung. Diese Verfassung der III. Republik wies Merkmale institutionellen Lernens auf, mit denen z.B. die hohe Fluktuation an Regierungschefs eingedmmt werden sollte. Doch das Parteiensystem ist weiter instabil, und nach den Prsidentschafts- und Parlamentswahlen von 2005 versuchten die Brder Kaczynski, eine IV. Republik zu errichten. Dieser Band stellt die politischen Kerninstitutionen Polens vor und behandelt die Dynamik ihrer Interaktionen. Er beleuchtet die Rolle zentraler gesellschaftlicher Akteure wie der Katholischen Kirche, analysiert die wichtigsten gesellschaftlichen Konfliktlinien und zeigt Entwicklungstendenzen des politischen Systems vor dem Hintergrund einer sich rapide modernisierenden Gesellschaft auf.
