Das Buch stellt den Spracherwerb und das sich dabei verndernde Verhltnis von Kindern zum Medium Sprache dar. Die Motivation von Kindern zur Weiterentwicklung ihrer sprachlichen Fhigkeiten beruht auf der Hinwendung, die sie von ihren Bezugspersonen erfahren, sowie auf Anregungen und Herausforderungen ihres (sprachlichen) Umfelds. Insofern kommt dem Kindergarten dabei eine wichtige Funktion zu. Bewusste berlegungen zu einer Sprachfrderung werden allerdings in vielen Einrichtungen erst dann angestellt, wenn Fachkrfte Sprachstrungen bei Kindern feststellen oder wenn Kinder mit einer nicht-deutschen Erstsprache den Kindergarten besuchen.
