Die Beitrge des Bandes gehen der Frage nach, welche Rolle den Nichtregierungsorganisationen (NGOs) in der Konzeption der internationalen Zivilgesellschaft zugeschrieben wird und wie sich die NGOs den Herausforderungen explizit und implizit stellen. Die Autoren und Autorinnen verfolgen dabei das Ziel, dem Phnomen der NGOs in theoretischen und empirischen Untersuchungen auf den Grund zu gehen und die NGOs in ihrer Wirkung auf die Entwicklung einer internationalen Zivilgesellschaft kritisch zu wrdigen. In den vier Kapiteln kommen Wissenschaftler, Experten, aber auch NGO-Aktive zu Wort. Kapitel I beschftigt sich mit der theoretischen Dimension der ,NGOs in der Zivilgesellschaft', Kapitel II widmet sich den ,Zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen konkret'. Hier werden in Innen- und Auenwahrnehmung traditionelle NGOs wie das Internationale Rote Kreuz und CARE International aber auch NGOs der 1990er Jahre wie Attac oder Transparency International vorgestellt. In Kapitel III wird die ,Strategiefhigkeit zivilgesellschaftlicher Organisationen' anhand empirischer Vergleichsstudien berprft. Das abschlieende Kapitel IV leuchtet vor dem Hintergrund der Debatte um die Steuerungsfhigkeit des Staates und neuer Akteure in den Internationalen Beziehungen in der Postmoderne das Verhltnis von ,NGOs und Staat' aus.
