Dieser Band der Schriften ist Ren Knigs Arbeiten "Zur Entfaltung der modernen Soziologie" gewidmet, in denen er die Stellung und Bedeutung des Faches vom Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts bis in die Zeit des zweiten Weltkrieges hinein thematisiert. Zwei Schwerpunkte sind dabei auszumachen, die Aufbruchsperiode der zwanziger Jahre und die erzwungene Emigration deutscher Soziologen unter dem Diktat des Nationalsozialismus. Der Titel des Aufsatzes "Soziologie als Oppositionswissenschaft und als Gesellschaftskritik" markiert sehr deutlich Knigs Auffassung von der Bedeutung der Soziologie in einer sich entwickelnden Gesellschaft.
