Bei der Untersuchung dieser Frage bringt Catherine Burgy neue, bisher kaum systematisch untersuchte Aspekte in die politikwissenschaftliche Forschung zur privaten Selbstregulierung in der Global Governance ein. Angesichts eines Rollenwandels des Staates knnen NGOs das Verhalten wirtschaftlicher Akteure wie Unternehmen durch politische Mechanismen steuern, ohne dass diese zwingend auf staatlicher Regulierung beruhen mssen. Der Kapitalmarkt als Lenkungssystem, genauer die Nutzung von Aktionrsrechten (Shareholder Engagement) bietet NGOs dabei vllig neue Mglichkeiten, das Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement auf Unternehmensseite zu kontrollieren. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Untersuchung von mglichen Einflussfaktoren fr die unterschiedliche Nutzung von Shareholder Engagement im Lndervergleich.
