This unique and popular chess set package includes our Zagreb series chess set with genuine ebony and natural boxwood pieces matched with our Walnut Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Board and Classic Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Box. Our Zagreb originates from the chess set designed for the 1950 Chess Olympiad held in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia. This set stands out from other Staunton designs with its opposite color tops on the king, queen, and bishop and the unique and handsome knight with its graceful curves and down-turned head. Ebony is one of the hardest woods in the world with no visible grain and when polished produces a chess piece with a glass-like obsidian luster. This is a tournament size set with a tall king and a base diameter of 1.625". The pieces have thick green baize pads so they slide smoothly across the chess board and are heavily weighted for stability. Our Walnut Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Board offers a luxurious back drop for these special chess pieces. Handcrafted from premium veneer, this chess board highlights the deep, rich hues of the walnut burl contrasted with the golden tones of the bird's-eye maple. The squares are surrounded with a wide black delimiter and a black border on the outside accentuates the bird's-eye maple frame. A semi-gloss polyurethane finish both protects and enhances the color of the wood. The squares are 2.125" with an overall footprint of 21.5".Our Bird's-Eye Maple Classic Chess Box is wonderfully constructed and reminiscent of the old heirloom quality chess boxes from years ago. The box is covered in beautiful bird's-eye maple veneer that perfectly matches the chess board squares and frame with a lustrous semi-gloss polyurethane finish. The interior is lined with a thick emerald-green baize just like we use for the pads on our chess pieces. The box has a divider in the center for conveniently storing the black and white pieces separately. We use high quality brass plated quadrant hinges that neatly recess into the wall of the box and a brass plated lock and key for securing the lid when closed. It's the perfect chess box for safely storing and protecting these special chess pieces.
