Commissioned in 1937 the Yorktown saw extensive service during World War II. It was present during some of the most iconic battles of the Pacific Theater including the Battle of Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway.The Yorktowns distinguished career came to an end during the Battle of Midway where it was heavily damaged by Japanese bombs and torpedoes. Despite her valiant efforts to stay afloat the Yorktown eventually succumbed to her wounds and sank beneath the waves.
