These enhancements were designed to improve the tanks survivability and effectiveness in urban warfare environments. The 1-4 Cavalry Regiment nicknamed "Quarterhorse" from the 1st Infantry Division deployed these upgraded M1A1 AIM TUSK tanks as part of the coalition forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom.The conflicts in Iraq presented unique challenges particularly in urban areas where traditional tank tactics needed adaptation. The M1A1 AIM TUSK addressed these challenges with features like additional armor protection reactive armor tiles and upgraded weapons making it better equipped to handle threats from infantry RPGs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The Quarterhorse regiment played a crucial role in securing urban environments contributing to the broader mission of stabilizing Iraq during a tumultuous peri.
