In June 1944 Lieutenant Cook Cleland serving with VB-16 aboard the USS Lexington piloted an SBD-5 Dauntless during intense combat operations. The USS Lexington one of the most famous aircraft carriers of the war deployed its complement of SBD Dauntless aircraft to provide close air support and conduct bombing raids against Japanese targets in the Pacific.During this period the SBD-5 Dauntless proved its worth in numerous engagements including the pivotal Battle of the Philippine Sea also known as the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot."
