The R5D-3 was a modified version of the Douglas DC-4 specifically adapted for long-range missions in extreme conditions. Its capabilities made it ideal for transporting personnel supplies and equipment to the icy continent facilitating vital research that would have significant implications for climate science and international cooperation.Throughout the operation the R5D-3 56528 undertook numerous flights to the Antarctic navigating treacherous weather and landing on makeshift runways.
