This chess set includes our 1849 Heirloom Staunton chess pieces handcrafted from ebony and boxwood matched with our Deluxe Two Drawer Elm Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Case. Our 18489 Heirloom chess set is a precise replica of the original Jaques London chessmen first introduced in 1849. This elegant pattern designed by Nathaniel Cook and endorsed by Howard Staunton paved the way for all future Staunton designs and the numerous variations. Each piece is masterfully turned on the lathe one piece at a time to exacting standards while the knights are hand carved by the most skilled craftsmen in the field. This is a thirty-four-piece set that includes two extra queens for pawn promotion. The king is tall with a base diameter of 1.5", the perfect size for casual chess games at home. The ebony and boxwood pieces have a gloss lacquer finish and keeping with the original design, the rook and knight have king-side stamping. The pieces are heavily weighted for exceptional stability have thick green baize pads for a soft cushion on the chess board. We include a Certificate of Manufacturer so you will always know what the pieces are, when they were made, and where they came from.Our Deluxe Two Drawer Elm Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Case seamlessly combines functionality with elegance, offering a chess board and storage for chess pieces all in one.
