This chess set includes our 1849 Heirloom Staunton chess pieces handcrafted from ebony and boxwood matched with our Deluxe Two Drawer Elm Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Case. Our 18489 Heirloom chess set is a precise replica of the original Jaques London chessmen first introduced in 1849. This elegant pattern designed by Nathaniel Cook and endorsed by Howard Staunton paved the way for all future Staunton designs and the numerous variations. Each piece is masterfully turned on the lathe one piece at a time to exacting standards while the knights are hand carved by the most skilled craftsmen in the field. This is a thirty-four-piece set that includes two extra queens for pawn promotion. The king is tall with a base diameter of 1.5", the perfect size for casual chess games at home. The ebony and boxwood pieces have a gloss lacquer finish and keeping with the original design, the rook and knight have king-side stamping. The pieces are heavily weighted for exceptional stability have thick green baize pads for a soft cushion on the chess board. We include a Certificate of Manufacturer so you will always know what the pieces are, when they were made, and where they came from.Our Deluxe Two Drawer Elm Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Case seamlessly combines functionality with elegance, offering a chess board and storage for chess pieces all in one. Handcrafted from solid wood, its exterior boasts graceful curves adorned with a three-row beaded section around the top and a refined molded edge beneath. The chess board, featuring high-quality elm burl and bird's-eye maple veneer, is accented by a decorative black delimiter highlighting the playing area. The chess board has two-inch squares and the case an overall footprint of nineteen inches square. A drawer on each player's side completely pulls out to make it easy to put pieces in and take them back out. Each drawer has sixteen individual compartments lined with a soft velour fabric to protect each piece.
