This chess set includes our Zagreb with burnt boxwood pieces matched with our Black and Walnut Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Board and Classic Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Box. This unique and beautiful chess set is a burnt version of our Zagreb with an elegant decorative design carved into each piece. Our Zagreb series chess sets have been a mainstay in our collection for decades. This design became prominent in the 1950's when it was first used in the World Championship Candidates Match held in Zagreb in 1959. This is a large set ideally suited for tournament play with a tall king and a base diameter of 1.625". Pieces are made from boxwood that is burnt and then a hand carved design is added to each piece creating a unique and distinguishable pattern. Pieces are heavily weighted for exceptional stability on the chess board and have thick green baize pads on the bottom for a soft cushion and allow the pieces to slide smoothly across the chess board.Our Black and Ash Burl High Gloss Deluxe Chess Board goes perfect with our burnt boxwood chess pieces. Imported from Spain, this is an inlaid chess board made for us by Rechapados Ferrer. The black and golden color of the natural ash burl are enhanced by the high gloss, glass-like finish creating an elegant backdrop for the burnt and boxwood chess pieces. A pinstripe delimiter around the squares and an extra-wide frame adds an elegant look to the board. The squares are 2.125" with the chess board measuring 21.5" x 21.5".Our Bird's-Eye Maple Classic Chess Box is wonderfully constructed and reminiscent of the old heirloom quality chess boxes from years ago. The box is covered in beautiful bird's-eye maple veneer that perfectly matches the chess board squares and frame with a lustrous semi-gloss polyurethane finish. The interior is lined with a thick emerald-green baize just like we use for the pads on our chess pieces. The box has a divider in the center for conveniently storing the black and white pieces separately. We use high quality brass plated quadrant hinges that neatly recess into the wall of the box and a brass plated lock and key for securing the lid when closed.
