This chess set package includes our Reykjavik Series with golden rosewood and boxwood pieces matched with our Walnut Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Board and Classic Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Box. This is the same chess set used by the legendary American Grandmaster Bobby Fischer when he beat reigning world champion and Grandmaster Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland. These handsome pieces have traditional Staunton features and are a favorite for chess players wanting a set that will stand up to the rigor of frequent use. These are golden rosewood and boxwood pieces with a traditional polished lacquer finish and are heavily weighted for superior balance and stability on the chess board. The king is tall and has a base diameter of 1.625", the perfect size for tournament chess games. Thick green billiard cloth pads let the pieces slide smoothly across the chess board and a quite soft feel when sitting down. We include two extra queens for pawn promotion and a certificate of authenticity so you will always know what the chess set is and where it came from.Our Walnut Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Board offers a luxurious back drop for these special chess pieces. Handcrafted from premium veneer, this chess board highlights the deep, rich hues of the walnut burl contrasted with the golden tones of the bird's-eye maple. The squares are surrounded with a wide black delimiter and a black border on the outside accentuates the bird's-eye maple frame. A semi-gloss polyurethane finish both protects and enhances the color of the wood. The squares are 2" with an overall footprint of 19.5".Our Bird's-Eye Maple Classic Chess Box is wonderfully constructed and reminiscent of the old heirloom quality chess boxes from years ago. The box is covered in beautiful bird's-eye maple veneer that perfectly matches the chess board squares and frame with a lustrous semi-gloss polyurethane finish. The interior is lined with a thick emerald-green baize just like we use for the pads on our chess pieces. The box has a divider in the center for conveniently storing the black and white pieces separately. We use high quality brass plated quadrant hinges that neatly recess into the wall of the box and a brass plated lock and key for securing the lid when closed.
