Operation Torch was the Allied invasion of French North Africa aiming to secure the region gain vital ports and establish a second front against Axis forces in North Africa.HMS Cumberland a heavy cruiser was among the Royal Navy ships involved in this ambitious operation. The Supermarine Walrus was the ships catapult-launched reconnaissance and spotter aircraft. The Walrus provided essential air support by conducting reconnaissance missions spotting for naval gunfire and performing search and rescue operations for downed aircrew.During Operation Torch the Supermarine Walrus aircraft from HMS Cumberland played a critical role in spotting for naval gunfire helping to accurately target enemy positions and provide covering fire for Allied troops landing on the North African coast. Additionally these versatile aircraft conducted reconnaissance missions gathering valuable intelligence on enemy movemen.
