As a variant of the F-4 Phantom II the F-4E was equipped with a more powerful engine and a state-of-the-art avionics suite allowing it to perform effectively in both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The 497th Squadron known as the "Nighthawks" was tasked with defending South Korean airspace amidst heightened tensions following the Korean War and during a period marked by geopolitical uncertainty in the region.Throughout its service F-4E 67-351 participated in numerous training exercises aimed at maintaining combat readiness against potential threats from North Korea. These exercises included simulated air combat ground attack missions and joint operations with allied forces. The aircraft was also involved in air policing missions to ensure the security of the Korean Peninsula showcasing its versatility.
