Known for its rugged dependability the C-47 was the military variant of the Douglas DC-3 a civilian airliner that had been adapted for combat duties. "Stoy Hora" played a critical role in various campaigns particularly during the D-Day invasion in June 1944 where it transported paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division behind enemy lines as part of Operation Overlord. Its missions were key to establishing the Allied beachheads in Normandy facilitating the largest amphibious invasion in history.After D-Day "Stoy Hora" continued to see extensive action in Europe participating in Operation Market Garden the ill-fated Allied attempt to capture key bridges in the Netherlands in September 1944. During this operation the aircraft once again dropped paratroopers into hostile territory demonstrating the importance of airborne infantry and the critical role the C-47 played in moving troops and supplies.
