Einerseits stellt sie fr rzte und Forscher eine Matrix dar, auf der sie ihre Beobachtungen strukturieren knnen und hilft ihnen bei der Beurteilung und Formulierung von Empfehlungen zur Intervention und zur weiteren Beobachtung. Andererseits gibt sie rzten, Therapeuten und Forschern eine gemeinsame Sprache, um systematisch Daten zu verschiedenen Strungen zu sammeln und auszutauschen, und um die Komponenten und die Effektivitt der Intervention zu verbessern. Dieses Diagnoseschema ist das Produkt der multidisziplinren diagnostischen Arbeitsgruppe, die 1987 von ZERO TO THREE/National Center for Infants, Toddlers, and Families (USA) gegrndet wurde, und dient als Ergnzung zu vorhandenen medizinischen und psychologischen Werken.
