This chess set includes our 1849 Heirloom Staunton chess pieces handcrafted from ebony and boxwood matched with our Black and Ash Burl High Gloss Deluxe Chess Board and Classic. Our 18489 Heirloom chess set is a precise replica of the original Jaques London chessmen first introduced in 1849. This elegant pattern designed by Nathaniel Cook and endorsed by Howard Staunton paved the way for all future Staunton designs and the numerous variations. Each piece is masterfully turned on the lathe one piece at a time to exacting standards while the knights are hand carved by the most skilled craftsmen in the field. This is a thirty-four-piece set that includes two extra queens for pawn promotion. The king is tall with a base diameter of 1.5", the perfect size for casual chess games at home. The boxwood is stained to rich brown-gold color to replicate the natural patina of a one-hundred-year-old chess piece and keeping with the original design, the rook and knight have king-side stamping. Heavily weighted for exceptional stability, the pieces have thick green baize pads for a soft cushion on the chess board. We include a Certificate of Manufacturer so you will always know what the pieces are, when they were made, and where they came from.Our Black and Ash Burl Deluxe Chess Board made for us by Rechapados Ferrer combines classic design with elegant features creating an eye-catching battlefield for your chess game. This is an inlaid chess board handcrafted from high quality black poplar and ash burl veneer sealed with a high gloss polyurethane finish giving the board a luxurious glass-like finish. A triple-layer delimiter defines the playing field, and a wide frame gives aesthetic balance to the board. The squares are 2" and the footprint of the board is 19.5" square. Four felt pads on the bottom will protect whatever furniture the board sets on.Our Classic Black Chess Box is wonderfully constructed and reminiscent of the old heirloom quality boxes from years ago. The box is solid black with a grand piano high gloss finish. The interior is lined with a luxurious thick green baize just like we use for the pads on our chess pieces. The box is a loose-piece design for simple stacking of the pieces and has a divider in the center for neatly storing the black and white pieces separately.
