This chess set includes our 1849 Heirloom Staunton chess pieces handcrafted from ebony and boxwood matched with our Walnut Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Board and Classic Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Box. Our 18489 Heirloom chess set is a precise replica of the original Jaques London chessmen first introduced in 1849. This elegant pattern designed by Nathaniel Cook and endorsed by Howard Staunton paved the way for all future Staunton designs and the numerous variations. Each piece is masterfully turned on the lathe one piece at a time to exacting standards while the knights are hand carved by the most skilled craftsmen in the field. This is a thirty-four-piece set that includes two extra queens for pawn promotion. The king is tall with a base diameter of 1.5", the perfect size for casual chess games at home. The boxwood pieces are antiqued to give the pieces the look of an old vintage chess set. Both the ebony and boxwood pieces are finished in gloss lacquer to both protect and enhance the beauty of the pieces. Keeping with the original design, the rook and knight have king-side stamping. Heavily weighted for exceptional stability, the pieces have thick green baize pads for a soft cushion on the chess board. We include a Certificate of Manufacturer so you will always know what the pieces are, when they were made, and where they came from.Our Walnut Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Board offers a luxurious back drop for these special chess pieces. Handcrafted from premium veneer, this chess board highlights the deep, rich hues of the walnut burl contrasted with the golden tones of the bird's-eye maple. The squares are surrounded with a wide black delimiter and a black border on the outside accentuates the bird's-eye maple frame. A semi-gloss polyurethane finish both protects and enhances the color of the wood. The squares are 2" with an overall footprint of 19.5".Our Bird's-Eye Maple Classic Chess Box is wonderfully constructed and reminiscent of the old heirloom quality chess boxes from years ago. The box is covered in beautiful bird's-eye maple veneer that perfectly matches the chess board squares and frame with a lustrous semi-gloss polyurethane finish. The interior is lined with a thick emerald-green baize just like we use for the pads on our chess pieces. The box has a divider in the center for conveniently storing the black and white pieces separately. We use high quality brass plated quadrant hinges that neatly recess into the wall of the box and a brass plated lock and key for securing the lid when closed.
