From the workshop of Italfama in Florence, Italy, comes this unique handcrafted chess set that includes their metal Medieval Figurine Chess Pieces matched with their Elm Burl Wood Chess Case. The different pieces are designed to capture the essence of the medieval period representing the king, his queen, church bishops, armored horses for knight, a castle tower for the rook, and medieval soldiers for the pawns. Each pieces is hand painted highlighting specific features in the design while leaving the rest of piece in its natural color. The king is 3.625" tall and has a base diameter of 1.25". The pieces are solid cast zinc formed by the old-world lost-wax casting process and are brass and nickel plated. The pieces are lacquered to prevent them from ever tarnishing and have red felt pads embossed with the Italfama logo. Being solid metal the pieces are extraordinarily heavy with the complete set weighing over ten pounds.The handcrafted chess case is beautifully designed and skillfully constructed by the craftsmen of Italfama. This case features solid fruit wood sides with an elegant molded profile surrounding a chess board on top made from elm wood burl and maple veneer. A single drawer has two compartments for storing the chess pieces when you want to put them away and large round legs on the bottom elevate the case enhancing its rich design and color. The elm wood burl is without a doubt one of the most beautiful woods in the world with unmatched character and colors ranging from burnt umber to golden-orange-brown.
