This chess set includes our 1849 Heirloom Staunton chess pieces handcrafted from ebony and boxwood matched with our Deluxe Two Drawer Black and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Case. Our 18489 Heirloom chess set is a precise replica of the original Jaques London chessmen first introduced in 1849. This elegant pattern designed by Nathaniel Cook and endorsed by Howard Staunton paved the way for all future Staunton designs and the numerous variations. Each piece is masterfully turned on the lathe one piece at a time to exacting standards while the knights are hand carved by the most skilled craftsmen in the field. This is a thirty-four-piece set that includes two extra queens for pawn promotion. The king is tall with a base diameter of 1.5", the perfect size for casual chess games at home. The boxwood is stained and antiqued to give the patina of a one-hundred-year-old chess piece and keeping with the original design, the rook and knight have king-side stamping. Heavily weighted for exceptional stability, the pieces have thick green baize pads for a soft cushion on the chess board. We include a Certificate of Manufacturer so you will always know what the pieces are, when they were made, and where they came from.Our Deluxe Two-Drawer Black & Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Case is the ideal choice for combining a chess board with a way for storing pieces when you are not playing a game. This exterior of the case is made from solid poplar with an elegant molded edge design that incorporates a graceful curve and a three row beaded section at the top. The chess board is made from black stained poplar and bird's-eye maple veneer and has a decorative mahogany inlaid border to delineate the playing area. There are two drawers, one on each player's side that completely pull out to make it easy to put pieces away or take them back out.
