This unique handcrafted chess set includes our Zagreb Series with ebonized and natural boxwood pieces matched with our Deluxe Two Drawer Elm Burl and Bird's-Eye Maple Chess Case. This design became prominent in the 1950's when it was first used in the World Championship Candidates Match held in Zagreb in 1959. This set stands out from other Staunton designs with its opposite color tops on the king, queen, and bishop and the unique and handsome knight with its graceful curves and down-turned head. The pieces are individually hand polished and lacquered to a beautiful luster. The king is tall and has a base diameter of 1.375" - an ideal size for the game at home. The pieces have thick green baize pads so they slide smoothly across the chess board and are heavily weighted for stability. The chess board has 1.75" squares and the case an overall footprint of 17.5". A drawer on each player's side completely pulls out to make it easy to put pieces in and take them back out.
