This tank equipped with a formidable 17-pounder anti-tank gun was specifically designed to counter the heavy German Panther and Tiger tanks which outmatched the standard Shermans in firepower and armor. The Fireflys introduction into service provided a much-needed boost in anti-tank capability for British and Commonwealth forces.In 1944 the Firefly VC served with distinction in the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards part of the 8th Armoured Brigade. This unit played a pivotal role during the Normandy campaign following the D-Day landings on June 6. The Firefly VCs powerful 17-pounder gun allowed it to effectively engage and destroy German heavy tanks from a distance significantly altering the dynamics of tank warfare in favor of the Allies. The 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards utilized the Firefly to great effect in operations such as Operation Epsom and the subseque.
