G was a highly influential German assault gun based on the Panzer III chassis modified to support infantry and provide powerful anti-tank capabilities. The Ausf. G variant introduced in late 1942 was the final and most produced model of the StuG series fitted with a 75mm StuK 40 L/48 gun capable of piercing armor with devastating accuracy. By 1943 this particular variant had gained improvements like a simplified superstructure thicker armor and the addition of Schürzen side skirts for increased protection against anti-tank weapons and infantry attacks. These modifications made the StuG III Ausf. G a formidable asset on the battlefield especially in the hands of seasoned crews.In 1943 units equipped with the StuG III Ausf. G such as Panzer Abteilung 115 saw extensive combat during the Italian Campaign. The rugged terrain of Italy posed unique challenges for armored vehicles but the StuG IIIs low profile and enhanced firepower proved advantageous in close-quarter engagements against Allied for.
